Chargers Head Coach Brandon Staley Introduces a New Football Guy Term: Competitive Casual

Chargers Head Coach Brandon Staley, Tom Wilson Fight Night And Fyre Fest Of The Week

On today's Pardon My Take... Los Angeles Chargers Head Coach Brandon Staley! The first-year man at the helm joined Mr. Cat and Mr. Commenter to discuss his journey to LA, some of the best players he has coached, Bolt Man, and much more. And although it is the offseason, you know that PMT is always looking for some new versions of a Football Guy. Luckily, that's exactly what we have here today. Coach Staley introduced a new term in "competitive casual." Here is what that means:

Mr. Cat: Every year when the NFL Head Coaches go to the Owners Meetings and they take a picture looking into the sun, and I break it down. Have you thought about that picture yet?

Brandon Staley: I'm aware of that. To sort of give you a preview of what could be happening, in the Draft Room, you know, I went with "competitive casual" attire.

Mr. Cat: Wait, what is that?

Mr. Commenter: I love it.

Brandon Staley: I didn't want to go with the banker attire, so we went competitive casual.

Mr. Cat: Explain competitive casual, break down competitive casual.

Mr. Commenter: That's just something that a football coach made up, I don't think that's an actual style.

Brandon Staley: It's actually in the lexicon of game day attire, but essentially, like, "Hey, we're a coach, I want these guys to be able to look back at their moment, and it's like, hey, that was their coach calling them, not some guy that looks like he runs a hedge fund."  So, and then from the picture standpoint at the Owner's Meetings, you know, it's in Arizona from what I understand, I don't know if you're going to be seeing a blazer and khakis.

Well, there you have it, folks. Competitive casual, the newest Football Guy term out there. And when Coach Staley is roaming the Los Angeles Chargers sidelines this fall, you bet you'll be seeing him and his staff in competitive casual attire.
